FEATURED CASE STUDY
Moroccan Courtyard, Brighton
A compact space transformed. A garden designed to be felt after dark.
Every project starts with a story. This one began with a compact urban courtyard in central Brighton with remarkable beauty, yet completely unlit after dark. The homeowners had invested in a beautifully crafted garden - Moroccan-inspired, rich in texture, pattern and warmth - and wanted the lighting to honour that investment rather than overwhelm it.
The garden was designed by Alick Nee of Fern & Pine Design Studio, a Brighton-based garden design practice, with construction by Grove Gardens. We were involved from the outset to design and deliver the lighting, working closely with the wider project team to ensure every fitting was seamlessly integrated into the overall design, rather than added as an afterthought.
The Approach
The garden was already rich with detail: decorative tiling, a Moroccan-style water feature, warm-toned materials, trellis screening and layered planting. The challenge wasn't to add drama - it was to reveal what was already there.
Working closely with Alick and the team from the early stages of the project, we designed a layered lighting scheme that mirrors the structure of the garden itself. The courtyard is divided into two distinct zones - an intimate dining area in the side return and a relaxed lounging space in the main garden - and the lighting reflects that. Low-level fittings pick out pathways and ground-level detail. Concealed uplighting reveals the texture of walls and planting without drawing attention to the source. The result is a garden that moves from day into evening without interruption - the same space, seen differently.
The standout feature of the project is the Moroccan tiled feature wall and water fountain. After dark, this becomes the focal point of the entire courtyard. We developed a bespoke lighting scheme specifically around this element, carefully positioning uplighting to accentuate the texture, colour and intricate detail within the tiles. The light creates depth and shadow across the surface, bringing the wall to life in a way that simply isn't possible in daylight.
To elevate the experience further, the water feature was integrated directly into the lighting control scenes. The fountain and lighting work together as a single element, creating different moods throughout the evening - whether set for entertaining, relaxing, or late-night ambience. The feature wall remains the visual centrepiece of the space whatever the occasion.
Intelligent Control
The project was specified with a Rako lighting control system - to give the clients complete flexibility over their garden after dark. Rather than managing individual circuits, a single touch transforms the entire atmosphere of the space. Different scenes were created for different moments: dining, entertaining, quiet evenings in. The technology works entirely behind the scenes - the client simply chooses how they want the space to feel.
The Result
The finished garden became something quite rare - a compact space that feels larger and more generous after dark than it does in daylight. Described by the press as a "secluded sanctuary" that is both intimate and generous, it demonstrates what becomes possible when lighting is part of the design from the beginning rather than an afterthought.
The project was selected by the BBC as the location to launch the 2026 RHS and BBC One Show Pocket Garden Makeover Prize, and was featured on BBC One's The One Show in February 2026 - a reflection of the quality of work that defined the entire project. The garden was subsequently covered in The Argus.
